kSlum has a mission to improve the living conditions of over
1 million people living in Africa's largest slum, Kibera.
|
We will do this by creating awareness of the situation in Kibera, raising funds for building toilet facilities & clean-water tanks, improving the waste removal systems, and working with the people of Kibera to develop sustainable economic and educational opportunities that residents can use to support themselves and improve their quality of life for generations to come.
Learn more about kSlum's mission -->
Kibera is a slum area outside Nairobi, Kenya and contains over 1 million residents. Most people living in Kibera have little or no access to basic neccessities, such as electricity, clean water, toilet facility and sewage disposal. This lack of sanitation accounts for many illnesses and deaths. Because of the lack of toilet facilities (1 for every 500-1000 people), two in three residents must use a "flying toilet" to defecate. There are also over 50,000 AIDS orphans surviving in Kibera, often cared for by grandparents, over crowded orphanages, or completely unattended. For these and other children in Kibera, schooling is rare and inadequate, trapping these youth in a cycle of poverty.

kSlum is not offering a handout, but instead, a life-long investment in the human potential of Kibera’s people. Together, we can provide an opportunity for good health and education that will enable them to take responsibility for their own future, and for the future of their children!
